Welcome to this week’s edition of the OOH Originals blog. I will be once again recapping the action and will be publishing a power-rankings in the near future.
RECAP OF WEEK 8
With the Chargers on their bye week, the Titans had a chance to extend their lead as number one seed in the AFC versus the improving but still struggling Jets. The game was a defensive 16-3 win for the Titans, who just allowed a measly 114 yards of offence for the Jets. Back-up QB Lawrence Fraser struggled for the Jets throwing three picks. The Titans secondary has greatly improved this season with Paul’s moves in the offseason – Desmond Trufant has been a quality addition and had a pick in this one.
The two teams at the top of the AFC East faced off in the Patriots and the Dolphins. The Dolphins won 24-17 with the Patriots having penalty problems giving away five in the game. Dolphins rookie RB Cornel Ragland again had a solid outing with 93 yards and a TD, expect him to be in the running for OROTY. This was a big statement win from the Dolphins and may signal the end of the Patriot’s dominance in the AFC East – it’s safe to say Dak is no Brady.
The Ravens returned to the top of the AFC North beating the Bengals 24-10. Wayne once again embraced his inner Kevin Keegan and saw his team ran all over by Christine Michael who gained 164 yards and 2 touchdowns just off 6 carries! This was all the more galling for Wayne as they held the Ravens to just 70 passing yards.
The Browns lost to a late field goal to go down 24-21 to the Colts. This game was very close despite the Colts picking off Tyrod three times and forcing four fumbles. Browns fans are starting to lose faith in Craig who is looking likely to miss the playoffs for a third straight year and has not turned the franchise around like he did with the Lions.
The Raiders improved to 4-3 with a 35-24 win over the Big Ben less Steelers. Carr and Murray were impressive for the Raiders combining for 330 yards and 5 TDs. This team is looking scary now Glyn has figured out how to do offence and defence and is looking like a good bet to make his first return to the postseason since Madden was 2D. As for the Steelers they’ll be disappointed with this one as they led till late in the fourth and had a heavy pass rush on Carr.
The Chiefs edged a win over the Broncos 24-19. Rookie QB Hogans continues to struggle for the Chiefs with 2 picks here but the Chiefs pass rush came alive with six sacks to help the team out. The Broncos have now dropped five games straight and face an uphill battle for the postseason.
Leading the way as usual in the lesser conference are those 49ers led by the man, the myth, the legend that is Professor CB with a 33-14 win over the Vikings. The Vikings have one of the better defences in the league but they were tore apart here with UFA Jhurell Pressley proving overall doesn’t matter with 160 yards and a TD.
Breathing down the 49ers collars are the Seahawks who overcame the Rams 26-20. The Hawks have relied heavily on Thomas Rawls’s strong running so far this season but it was Wilson who threw them to victory in this one with 325 yards and 2 TDs. The Rams have fallen far from their superbowl appearance in season one.
Two potential playoff teams met in New York with the Giants squaring off against the Rams. The Lions found themselves in a 23-0 hole early on but managed to fight back to just miss out on the win and lose 23-21. Moose complained post game about the number of drops from receivers which left QB Rodgers wishing he stayed in Green Bay.
Another two teams in the playoff pictures – the Saints and Falcons played out a 36-27 shootout won by the Saints. Quarterbacks – Crockett for the Saints and Winston for the Falcons both threw for 4 TDs each but turnovers proved costly with Winston throwing a pick more than Crockett. The result left Falcons fans expecting their almost annually second half of the season collapse.
Elsewhere in the NFC South the one-armed Panthers swept away the stinking pile of turd that is the Buccs 20-10. Once again the Buccs had no running game whatsoever with Big D hawking Martin after the game in chat helpfully saying he had lost a few steps. To make matters worse Andrew Luck could not get it done throwing two picks and being off on a lot of throws. On the other side the Panthers took advantage of the shambles that is the Buccs O notching up five sacks.
The Cardinals blew out the Redskins 36-13 in this week’s edition of ‘Tank wars’ to notch their second win of the season. Neither offence was great but the difference was that the Redskins QB threw pick after pick ( seven in total) and the Cardinals pounded the ball with David Johnson for 65 yards off 25 carries and avoided mistakes.
In the game that no-one really cared about the Eagles vs Texans, the Eagles won 31-24 to get their third sim win of the season to move to 3-4 in the NFC Sim East. The Texans after starting strongly with arguably the best defence in the league have now fallen to 3-4 and are in trouble.
