It’s that time of year, the Christmas of the NFL. Here’s my (very amateur) mock draft.
Cleveland Browns, Myles Garrett DE
There’s been recent speculation that the Browns may consider a QB here, forget about it, Myles Garrett is a lock for the number 1 pick.
San Francisco 49ers, Solomon Thomas DE
I wouldn’t be surprised if the 49ers trade down from here as their roster is a mess. If they don’t get any takers though Solomon’s versatility and pass rushing instincts immediately upgrade the 49ers Dline
Chicago Bears, Jamal Adams S
It’s easy to see Marshawn Lattimore going here, but Adams has ideal size, versatility, explosiveness and is ready to play in the NFL. More importantly though he’s a true leader and is an instant upgrade for the Bears.
Jacksonville Jaguars, Leonard Fornette RB
The Jaguars have an outstanding young defense, this year they turn their attention to the offence. A lot has been said about Bortles and his mechanics but he’s their franchise QB. Expect them to take Fornette here to alleviate some of the mounting pressure on Blake.
Tennessee Titans, Marshawn Lattimore CB
Lattimore is a big, physical Corner with great covering skills. His injury record is a concern but he’s an instant starter for Tennessee.
Cleveland Browns (Projected trade with New York Jets), Mitchell Trubisky QB
In this scenario, the Browns don’t run the risk of the Jets taking their number 1 QB and trade up to take Trubisky. There’s been much speculation about the Browns trading for Jimmy G, but the Patriots won’t allow their Brady insurance to leave….. Will they?
Los Angeles Chargers, Malik Hooker S
The Chargers finally find Eric Weddle’s successor. As well as being the best player on the board, Hooker fills a major need.
Carolina Panthers, Jonathan Allen DT
Tackle makes sense here but it’s a little early to take one. Allen could have been a top pick in previous years however shoulder concerns means he drops a few spots, this is a great value pick for the Panthers.
Cincinnati Bengals, Mike Williams WR
Derek Barnett would also make sense here, but the Bengals have an opportunity to add an exceptional offensive threat to their roster. The Bengals struggled with AJ Green injured for a long period last year and LaFell isn’t a great option at WR2, Williams is.
Buffalo Bills, Corey Davis WR
Sammy Watkins just can’t be relied upon. Davies adds a new dynamic to a Buffalo roster that has neglected the offence for too long.
New Orleans Saints, Rueben Foster LB
One of the biggest hitters in the draft this year, Foster is a mean football player. With the Saints having a need at Linebacker and Foster still on the board this pick just makes too much sense.
New York Jets (Projected trade with Cleveland Browns), DeShone Kizer QB
With the Jets trading down to acquire more picks I expect them to take a QB. Watson could just as easily be taken here. In fact a coin was tossed just to pick one….. no seriously, it was.
Arizona Cardinals, Jabrill Peppers S
The Cardinals have needs at Corner, Safety and Linebacker, Peppers versatility and experience playing all 3 positions could mean he comes off the board earlier than expected.
Philadelphia Eagles, Tre’Davious White, CB
Cornerback was a major weakness for the Eagles last year. Sydney Jones is still on the board but his injury status raises a red flag. The Eagles go ahead and take White instead.
Indianapolis Colts, Ryan Ramczyk OT
The new regime has made it obvious they need help along both lines. Derek Barnett is still available but keeping Luck upright is more of a priority and in a draft that lacks Oline quality they go ahead and take Ramczyk.
Baltimore Ravens, Derek Barnett DE
Great value here for the Ravens to get such a talented Pass Rusher. Barnett didn’t test great at the combine but the tape speaks for itself.
Washington Redskins, John Ross WR
The Redskins have needs at Linebacker and Safety but the prospect of adding a difference maker to their passing game is too much of an opportunity to turn down.
Tennessee Titans, OJ Howard TE
With Walker on the back 9 of his career the Titans add a real playmaker. Marcus Mariota needs a big weapon to target and OJ Howard fits the bill nicely.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Christian McCaffery RB
Doug Martins days in Tampa may be numbered. McCaffrey is a capable runner and dynamic weapon in the passing game.
Denver Broncos, Forrest Lamp G
The Broncos desperately need an upgrade and Lamp is a versatile Lineman that can (apparently) play all 5 positions.
Detroit Lions, TJ Watt LB
A versatile Linebacker that can play inside or outside TJ Watt is a 3 down Linebacker which exactly what the Lions need.
Miami Dolphins, David Njoku TE
Jordan Cameron is out of the picture and Julius Thomas has hardly shown himself to be a quality Tight End in recent years. By taking Njoku here the Dolphins are getting great value for what good arguably be one of their biggest areas of need.
New York Giants, Garrett Bolles OT
Yes they took Flowers a couple of years ago but he’s struggling. The Giants could look for Eli’s successor here but Bolles is a franchise player who could immediately upgrades their line.
Oakland Raiders, Jarrad Davis LB
Although there is an argument to be made for a Corner here, Davis has excellent instincts who great in coverage. Just what the Raiders need.
Houston Texans , DeShaun Watson QB
The worst kept secret in Football, the Texans need a QB. No Brainer.
Seattle Seahawks, Cam Robinson OT
Another team who’s playoff hopes were dashed due to their poor Oline. Robinson is a monster in the trenches and the former 5 star recruit lines up as the franchise LT.
Kansas City Chiefs, Teez Tabor, CB
Slower than most would like, but Teez is a physical playmaker who will benefit from having Eric Berry behind him.
Dallas Cowboys , Gareon Conley CB
Impressive workouts at the combine boosted Gareon draft stock. He’s a good fit for the Cowboys, who need to upgrade their secondary.
Green Bay Packers, Joe Mixon RB
Joe really is a tale of the two tapes. There’s his game tape, and ‘THE’ tape. Regardless of his history, there have been a number of players, who, over the years, have been in the headlines for the wrong reasons and have gone on to do great things in the NFL. Joe Mixon will be one of them
Pittsburg Steelers, Takkarist McKinley DE
The last thing the Steelers need (from my point of view) is speed on defense, but….. McKinley is lightning coming off the edge and he has a high motor.
Atlanta Falcons, Taco Charlton DE
The Oline board is gone and the Falcons need another edge defender with pass-rushing skills to throw into the rotation.
Chicago Bears, (Projected Trade with New Orleans Saints) Patrick Mahomes QB
Initially I had Sydney Jones going to the Saints here. However I think the Bears will jump back into the 1st round, leapfrogging the 49ers to take Mahomes and getting the 5th option in the process. Mahomes will have a redshirt first season behind Glennon, giving him chance to get up to speed in a NFL offence.
